I favor more of them spaced out to absorb AOE, but higher tier works a little better with repair (manual or tower) - lvl 2 walls might be the sweet spot. Walls have linear scaling, so lvl 1-3 gives you health at the same rate as you consume carbonium. So you can store more level 1 if you have map space and more level 1 storage building will also have more health for the final wave to chew through before they get to important structures. Other upgrades save space, but I think never save resources.
